Fix “An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist (1008)” error

If you run a task on the "All Users" tab, you may get "An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist (1008)" error.

This error usually means that there was no active user at the moment when the task started.

Note: Active user is the user who is physically working on the computer at the moment, Remote Desktop users are not considered as active users.

How to fix the issue:

To resolve this issue, use one of the following solutions:

  • You can run your task in background on the hidden desktop independently from the logged on users, if your task does not require user input.
  • You can run your task for specific user only if that user is logged on and active. Other users will be ignored even if they are logged on. The option is "Run tasks when only one of the following users is logged on and active" on the "User Account Options" tab of the "Task Properties" window.
  • You can run your task on the current user's tab (Basic and Professional editions).
